A short history
Bethnal Green was one of the pioneers of the silk-weaving trade throughout the 18th Century, attracting many Huguenot and Irish weavers. Hard hit by the aerial bombardment of the Second World War, the area became the focus of social housing developments. Bethnal Green has been part of Greater London since 1965.

Pick up National Rail Services from Bethnal Green Station, or nearby Cambridge Heath, with Hackney Downs just a 5 minute journey away. You’re also well-served by bus routes.
Bethnal Green is also popular with cyclists, with the CS2 Cycle Superhighway running from Aldgate to Stratford. Whether you’re on your own bike, or picking up a Santander Cycle, you can take a largely segregated route into Central London, away from other traffic.

Shopping, eating and drinking
Bethnal Green offers a vibrant mix of the old and new. For every deli or upmarket bistro, there’s a sports bar or authentic caff.
Don’t miss E Pellicci, which despite the name is a traditional greasy spoon, good enough to be given listed status by English Heritage. Always heaving at the weekends, it’s great for friends and families.
The area’s large Bangladeshi community accounts for the vibrant shops and restaurants around Roman Road. Or if you want to venture further afield, Hoxton, Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane are within walking distance. Once famous as the scene of crime for the notorious Jack the Ripper, Brick Lane is now popular for its Sunday market with vintage furniture, clothing and collectables, plus its many cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars.
For a quirky retail experience, head to Box Park, the world’s first pop up mall. Constructed from shipping containers, this innovative shopping concept houses iconic brands such as Nike, Lacoste, Dockers and Levis.
Things to do
Victoria Park, London’s oldest purpose built public park, borders Bethnal Green and hosts events and music festivals throughout the year. It’s the perfect location to relax after an overdose of city life.
The V&A Museum of Childhood houses the largest collection of childhood objects in the UK, in an impressive Grade II listed Victorian building. Ideal for both adults and children, it offers a trip down memory lane, with items ranging from a 1673 dolls house, to 1980's Lego sets and modern toys.
