A short history
The highway after which Enfield Highway was named was originally a Roman Road and is now the A1010 Hertford Road.
Enfield became an important Medieval centre in 1303, having been given a market charter by Edward I, but it wasn’t until the arrival of the railway in 1840 that Enfield became a suburb of London. Growth in the early 20th Century was so rapid that Green Belt laws were imposed after World War Two to protect the neighbouring countryside.
The Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF) was established at Enfield in 1816, and during the next 100 years it developed from a single, water-powered mill to a complex modern factory. As the main Government-owned manufactory for the production of military small arms, the RSAF produced hundreds of thousands of rifles and machine guns during both world wars.
Former residents of Enfield include Sir John Betjeman, Thomas Hardy and John Keats. The town also has a rich industrial past, as the birthplace of solid-state circuitry colour television, the first mass-produced Dishwasher and the first Cash Machine (ATM).
Property
There’s a wide choice of property in Enfield Highway, ranging from modern, purpose-built blocks to Victorian terraces.
Enfield Island Village was built between 1997 and 2003 on a 100-acre site previously occupied by the Royal Small Arms Factory. With a mixture of housing ranging from one-bedroom flats to five-bedroom houses, the development has a central parkland area, a small supermarket, a pharmacy, a take-away, a private fitness centre, and a library.
Enfield will soon benefit from the £3.5 Billion Meridian Way development. This ground-breaking regeneration project covers an 85 hectare area and will provide 10,000 new homes, a full range of shops and facilities, a new Meridian Water train station and 6,700 permenant jobs. This is a phased development, but the station will open in 2018, with some homes available from this date.
