Our Enfield Town branch covers the area west to Oakwood and Cockfosters, and south to Bush Hiull Park, Palmers Green and Southgate.
A short history
Enfield became an important medieval centre in 1303, having been given a market charter by Edward I, but it wasn’t until the arrival of the railway in 1840 that Enfield became a suburb of London. Growth in the early 20th Century was so rapid that Green Belt laws were imposed after World War Two to protect the neighbouring countryside.
Just north of Enfield Town is Forty Hall, one of England's finest historic houses. Set in its own estate, with gardens, lakes, lawns, and meadows, Forty Hall was built by former Lord Mayor of London, Sir Nicholas Rainton in 1632. The Hall has been changed and reworked by a number of owners, however many architectural features remain from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Former residents of the Enfield area include Sir John Betjeman, Thomas Hardy and John Keats. The town also has a rich industrial past, as the birthplace of the Lee-Enfield rifle, solid-state circuitry colour television, the first mass-produced Dishwasher and the first Cash Machine (ATM) at Barclays Bank in June 1967.

You have a mouth-watering choice when deciding where to eat out in Enfield Town. Pretty much every national cuisine is represented in the borough. In addition to the usual coffee chains, you’ll find many interesting cafes in which to have a drink or a bite to eat. Things to do
If you like to explore the great outdoors, you have many options, such as Grovelands Park, with a lake, playground and café. A walk along the River Lea towpath is also a popular option.
Trent Park Country Park, on the western outskirts of Enfield, offers ancient woodlands almost unchanged from the days when Henry VIII used the land for the royal deer hunt. Nowadays, locals use the large open spaces for walking, jogging, cycling, horse riding, golfing or simply relaxing in serene and picturesque surroundings.
There are many other options for keeping fit within the area. In addition to leisure centres and gyms, there are sporting venues, such as clay shooting at the Rectory Farm Shooting Ground, tennis, golf and bowls.
Culture vultures should take a look at the perfomances offered by the Dugdale Theatre, plus their museum and gallery. There’s also a large Cineworld IMAX for catching up on the latest film releases.
An interesting attraction is the Whitewebbs Museum of Transport, with old cars and motorcycles on display. Plus don’t miss visiting Forty Hall manor house, surrounded by ancient royal parkland. Dating back to the 1620s, Forty Hall is now a museum of life in the 17th Century, and frequently hosts concerts and workshops.
North of Forty Hall is Capel Manor Gardens, a beautiful estate first established in the late 13th century surrounding a Georgian Manor House. With Chelsea Flower Show medal winning gardens and a College for land-based studies, there is plenty of inspiration on offer for the amateur gardener.
